Assigned Birth Sex & Core Gender Identity
![]() |
It's the first thing parents wonder
about their unborn child - "Will it be a boy or a girl?" Once the birth sex is assigned, the baby ceases being an "it" and becomes a he or she, a boy or girl, a son or daughter. For some children though, their assigned birth sex may not adequately reflect or coincide with the way they express themselves. |
| Blanket Statement by Nancy Moore |
For some children, the assigned birth sex may not
even match their internal
core gender identity.
Healthy outcomes for children most often occur when a holistic
approach is taken in meeting the needs of the entire family. In many instances, a gender non-conforming or transgender child's
primary psychological and emotional needs are met once they receive
the support of caregivers and are given the freedom to express their
gender identity in whatever way feels most comfortable to them.
It is not at all uncommon however, for parents, siblings, extended family and others to struggle to varying degrees in making the adjustments that go along with supporting their child, brother or sister's gender expression.
Our experienced counselors and staff can assist your family in finding answers to these and other questions that may (or may not) be related to your child's gender identity and gender expression.
Case Management
TransActive's case management approach assumes that families of
transgender and gender non-conforming children and youth may need to
access services from a range of service providers and the goal is to
achieve seamless service delivery.
This may include, but is not limited to:
- Social services referral (Counseling, Housing, Domestic Violence, Child Welfare, etc.)
- Medical care referral (Family Practice, Pediatric Specialists, etc.)
- Legal services referral (Child Custody, Discrimination, Divorce, Name & Gender Change)
- Consultation (Current or Past Providers, Extended Family, School Faculty & Staff, etc.)
The goal is to empower the client and ensure that they are involved in all aspects of the planning and service arrangements in a dynamic way.
Referrals & Advocacy
TransActive is committed to working as a partner to other agencies, organizations and providers that may offer services or programs that enhance those we provide in order to meet the needs of our clients.
Transgender and gender non-conforming child and youth advocacy is at the center of TransActive's mission. Our focus and dedication to providing unequivocal advocacy on behalf of the families we serve takes many forms, including:
- Being an unwavering ally to parents, caregivers and others who are supporting a child or youth in their gender identity expression.
- Acting as the "gender identity experts" whenever necessary so that parents and caregivers don't feel the need to have all the answers that others may ask.
- Speaking on behalf of the child/family to friends, neighbors, employers, community groups, etc.
- Providing child specific education to attorneys, the judiciary, CASA/GAL representatives or others involved in legal proceedings that may involve a transgender child
- Representing the child/family in communication with various forms of media or news organizations in the highly unlikely event that becomes necessary
