General Summary:

TransActive Gender Center Education Intern will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in developing educational materials, helping to create trainings, participating in community outreach and advocating on behalf of transgender and gender diverse children, youth and their families. The Education Intern must have a strong commitment to social justice, equality and civil rights related to transgender and gender diverse community. This internship is supervised by the Education Program Manager.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Develop educational/training materials, assist in advocacy services, and participate in community outreach
  • Maintain confidentiality when accessing/discussing HIPAA protected information with clients and staff
  • Providing administrative support to the Program Manager, Program Coordinator and Executive Director as needed

Additional responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Checking and responding to email inquiries about educational and advocacy opportunities
  • Assisting with preparing literature for public distribution
  • Assisting in creation of literature, brochures and presentations for START training
  • Contact and schedule START training opportunities
  • Schedule TGC speaking events
  • Tabling and participating in community outreach and education
  • Helping with “In A Bind” [chest binder] distribution as needed
  • Review educational and advocacy referrals
  • Advocate for Clients:
    • Contact clients, schedule appointments
    • Conduct advocacy intake appointments
    • Create advocacy Action Plans
    • Attend meetings related to client advocacy
    • Conduct research related to client advocacy
  • Data entry and reviewing statistical data

Scope of Responsibility:

The intern will learn the formal & informal policies, procedures, and practices necessary to conduct day-to-day operation of the Education program at the Center.

Decision Making:

The intern carries out routine duties and responsibilities under manager supervision. They make decisions and establish work priorities on essentially procedure-oriented operations. They must be detail-oriented, self-starting and have strong interpersonal skills.


The intern does not direct the activities or function of staff, interns or volunteers.


The intern is responsible at times for contacting advocacy clients, and engaging with schools and institutions interested in training. Good communication skills (including phone skills) are important. The intern must be able to be respectful, professional, and have the ability to work with transgender, gender diverse, and cisgender individuals. Ability to problem-solve and self-direct without constant supervision is essential.


Undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to apply.


The intern must have experience in a professional office setting, as well as above average writing, research, organizational, and computer skills. Six months work experience required. Because of the work TransActive Gender Center does on behalf of transgender and gender diverse children, youth and their families, a background in this area (or familiarity with related issues), legal or otherwise, will greatly strengthen the application.

Technology Requirement:

  • Ability to use MS Windows-based personal computer to access webmail, use Google calendars, and create MS Office & Google Drive documents.
  • MS Windows literate and proficient in Microsoft Office products, i.e., of Excel, Word, PowerPoint. Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Access and/or Publisher is a plus.
  • Ability to navigate web systems including Facebook, search engines, and webmail as well as telephonic voicemail.
